Bharati Thakur, the founder of NARMADA is an avid traveler, nature lover, a well-known writer and a former Central Government employee in Maharashtra, gave up her lucrative career for NARMADA.

A rebel in her family, Bharati left home in her mid 30s to work in the far away and neglected areas of the North Eastern parts of India. She was instrumental in setting up a school and getting back the tribal children of those areas back to the school, where otherwise, going to school was nowhere a priority.

In 2005, Bharati and two of her friends undertook a 3200 km journey on the banks of the Narmada river. The journey, an arduous walk over various terrains has great significance in the canons of Hinduism and even in other spiritual disciplines. It is called Narmada Parikrama – circumambulation of the river Narmada. Bharati completed this journey in 5 months.

This journey helped her see the condition of people living on the banks of Narmada – she understood their viewpoint on the Narmada Valley Development Plan and witnessed the reality on the ground. She came across people in the Nimar region who were severely affected and deprived; she instantly decided to devote herself to this cause. This region is very fertile and gets bumper crops of wheat, cotton, soybean and pulses. Yet, prosperity that should be associated with the fertility of land is not visible. It is essentially because the proportion of land holders and landless labors is inverse. Growing number of child labor has resulted in increase in school dropouts. The number of such school dropouts is very alarming. Most of these children work on farms and are engaged in agriculture activities like plucking cotton, chilies, and tending the cattle etc. Girls bear the brunt of managing the household chores and looking after their young siblings when their parents are away on the fields working on daily wages.

In July 2009 Bharati came to Mandleshwar, a small town in Madhya Pradesh on the banks of Narmada. She started teaching school drop outs and students very weak in studies at Lepa, a place on the south banks of .Narmada. The overwhelming response by the drop out students for her endeavor encouraged Bharati to expand her activities in few nearby villages with the help of local womenfolk. In 2010, with the help of like-minded people of Mandleshwar, Bharati set up Nimar Abhyudaya Rural Management and Development Association (NARMADA).

NARMADA runs 8 educational centers across the villages.

All the children are in the age group of 6 to 14 years and majority of them are out of school. After NARMADA’s intervention some of the children have been enrolled in Government schools. The centres run for 4 hours during the day after which the children help their parents out in the fields or tend the cattle.

Students of several government-run middle schools and high schools in the region do not have science lab facilities. They cannot perform science experiments. They have to depend only on textbooks to write answers to questions in the examinations. They thus lag behind their urban counterparts. More important, they do not develop scientific temperament.

NARMADA has undertaken a modest initiative to overcome these lacunae by starting a mobile science Laboratory. A van carrying scientific equipment visits nearby villages as per a well-laid out schedule. Science experiments are demonstrated to the middle school students who can carry out the experiments under the guidance of the teachers and our volunteers.

भारती ताई ठाकूर

एक सुखवस्तू आयुष्यात जगणाऱ्या, नाशिक मध्ये संरक्षण खात्यात खूप छान नोकरी करत होत्या. १४ ऑक्टोबर २००५ ते १२ मार्च २००६ या काळात नर्मदे ची पायी परिक्रमा केली. काठावरील लोकांचे शिक्षणा विषयीचे अज्ञान पाहिले, मुलांना शाळेत घालून घडविण्यापेक्षा शेतात, कामात राबवून घेण्याचा पालकांचा कल पाहिला आणि भारती ताईंचे मन अंतर्बाह्य हेलावले. आजवर स्वतःसाठी जगले यापुढे शिक्षणापासून वंचित असणाऱ्या नर्मदे च्या काठावरील दारिद्र्य रेषेखालील मुलांच्या आयुष्यात ज्ञानज्योत प्रज्वलित करून समाजबांधवांचे ऋण फेडायचे अशी मनाशी खूणगाठ बांधली आणि सुरू झाला एक नवा प्रवास तिमिरा कडून प्रकाशाकडे. २००९ मध्ये स्वेच्छानिवृत्ती घेतली, प्रत्यक्ष कामास सुरुवात झाली, मध्य प्रदेशातील निमा ड प्रांतातील मंडलेश्वर येथे भाड्याने खोली घेतली, मंडलेश्वर ते लेपा असा जाऊन येऊन रोज१६ किमी चा पायी प्रवास सुरू झाला, लेपा गावातील मुलांना शिकवू लागल्या, ६ विद्यार्थ्यांपासून सुरू झालेला हा प्रवास १७०० विद्यार्थ्यां पर्यंत पोचला, मुलांना रुची वाटावी म्हणून सकस माध्यन्ह भोजनाची व्यवस्था केली, आता नर्मदा माईच्या कृपेने सुरू झालेला नर्मदालाय या संस्थेचा प्रवास अनेक निराधार मुलांचा जीवनाचा आधार बनला, ताईंचे कार्य निष्ठेने प्रामाणिकपणे सुरू आहे. शुभदा ताई, राघव, दिग्विजय, गोलु, शंकर सारखे सहकारी लाभले, संस्था विनाअनुदानित आहे, समाजाच्या पाठबळावर च काम चालू आहे, महाराष्ट्र कन्या भारती ताईंनी या ज्ञान यज्ञात स्वतःला झोकून दिले आहे, मोठी अभिमानास्पद कामगिरी त्या करत आहेत, इथे हिऱ्यांना पैलू पाडले जात आहेत, शिक्षणापासून दूर असणाऱ्या अनेक पिढ्या या ज्ञानज्योती ने उजळणार आहेत. संस्थेची स्वतः ची गोशाळा आहे, १७ गायी गुरे आहेत. गायींची देखभाल मुलेच करतात अगदी गायीचे बाळंतपण सुद्धा.. मध्य प्रदेशातील अली राज पूर या दुर्गम आदिवासी जिल्ह्यातील २७ मुले ज्यांचे घरी जायचे म्हणजे आजही सरदार सरोवर धरणात किमान ५ तासांचे बोटींग करावे लागते , घरी सर्वच बाबींची वानवा आहे संस्थेत निवासी असून त्यांच्या निवास, भोजन व शिक्षणाचा सर्व खर्च संस्था करते. संस्थेतील मुले भगवद्गीतेतील ४ अध्याय , आद्यगुरू शंकराचार्य, टेम्बे स्वामी यांची कठिण अवघड संस्कृत स्तोत्रे लीलया वाचू म्हणू व विविध रागांमध्ये गाऊ शकतात. मुलांना शास्त्रीय संगीत शिकवायला इंदोर हून शुभदा ताई मराठे येतात,मुलांचं गायन वादन ऐकलं पाहिलं म्हणजे साक्षात सरस्वती च्या मंदिरात आल्याचं जाणवते. त्यांचे मिस्टर संस्थेच्या अकाउंट्स विभागाची जबाबदारी सांभाळतात. राघव देवस्थळी हा मुलगा खरंतर कमर्शियल पायलट आहे. पण आता तो पूर्णवेळ संस्थेचे काम करत आहे, गोलु दिग्विजय व त्यांचे सहकारी यांनी संस्थेला पूर्णवेळ वाहून घेतलंय. पहाटे ५वाजता संस्थेचा दिवस सुरू होतो, स्वच्छता, झाडलोट, स्वयंपाक घर, प्रार्थना, गोशाळा आदि सर्व गोष्टींमध्ये सर्वांचा सक्रिय सहभाग असतो, एकूणच काय तर मुलांना केवळ पुस्तकीं शिक्षण न देता जीवन जगण्यसाठी सक्षम बनवले जाते. संस्थेतील सर्व फर्निचर संस्थेच्या 1 मुलांनीच बनवले आहे, संस्थेतील शंकर व राघव ने solar dryer या विषयावर चा शोध निबंध ८० देशातील प्रतिनिधिसमोर पोर्तुगाल येथे सादर केला, संस्था सातासमुद्रापार नेली, भारती ताईंनी त्यांच्या पायीं परिक्रमेतील अनुभवा वर आधारित "नर्मदा परिक्रमा एक अंतर यात्रा " या नावाचे खूप छान पुस्तक लिहिले आहे. संस्थेतील मुलांनी बनवलेल्या विविध गृहोपयोगी वस्तू आणि कपडे यांची विविध ठिकाणी प्रदर्शने भरवून वस्तूंच्या विक्री द्वारे संस्थेच्या खर्चास 1हातभार लावला जातो. भारती ताई सर्व जबाबदारी नर्मदा माईच्या कृपेने समर्थ पणे संभाळत आहेत, नर्मदालाय ही संस्था नर्मदेच्या काठावरील आधुनिक भारतातील नवे तीर्थक्षेत्र आहे. अशा संस्थेला भेट देऊन भारती ताईंच्या कार्याचा गौरव करणे, त्यांना आवश्यक ती मदत करणे हे तमाम मराठी बांधवांचे आद्यकर्तव्य आहे, भारती ताईंच्या कार्यास यशोधन ट्रॅव्हल्स चा मानाचा मुजरा, ताई नर्मदे हर.
